What Is Headshot Photography?
Headshot photography by definition is a focused, professional portrait highlighting an individual’s face, typically framed from the chest or shoulders up. Traditionally, a headshot is taken in a studio environment against a white backdrop. While this type of headshot will always have its place, and I use it sometimes too, I personally think it can lack creativity and personality.
A headshot is often the first impression that your business makes, so why not do everything you can to show your personality and brand identity.

Why Traditional Headshots Often Fall Short
Classic corporate headshots are clean, safe, and consistent, but they can lack individuality. We’re effectively blending in with the crowd, instead of showcasing our company culture, highlighting our diverse personalities, and creating a strong emotional connection with our audience.

What Makes A Headshot Creative?
Creative doesn’t mean unprofessional, it means intentional.
A creative business headshot still aligns with our brand standards, but adds a layer of visual interest through elements such as:
- Environment: Photographing in real workspaces, outdoors, or meaningful locations. If using a studio, your brand colour can be used as a backdrop.
- Composition: More opportunity for different angles, framing, and depth.
- Expression: Encouraging genuine emotion instead of stiff poses.
- Styling: Incorporating your wardrobe and/or props to reflect your role and personality.
The goal is to create images that feel human, while still polished, especially when AI is rising for image creation.
Aligning Your Headshot With Your Brand
Your headshot should match the experience you offer. So before your photoshoot, ask yourself:
- How do I want to come across in my headshot? Approachable? Authoritative?
- Do I want a polished or relaxed look? Or a blend of the two?
- What are my brand values? And how can I get them across in my imagery?
So when you update your headshot next, try not to think of it as a chore. Instead, think of it as an opportunity to showcase your best self to your growing audience.
